For Communities

Policy

NEC will promote social contribution activities that will consider the benefits and development of all stakeholders, starting with the local society, and it will fulfill its social responsibilities as a "good corporate citizen."

Please follow this link for further details on NEC’s basic approach, framework, program evaluation system and other matters.

Main Activities and Results (Fiscal 2011)

NEC conducts various programs based on the following objectives: "Eliminating the Digital Divide (Helping to solve poverty issues in developing countries and improving accessibility)," "Developing Entrepreneurs for Social Innovation," "Youth Education that Cultivates Creativity," "Protecting the Earth's Environment and Biodiversity," and "Realizing a Diverse & Thriving Society." Through communication with stakeholders such as NPOs and NGOs, NEC works to improve these programs, while striving to commence new programs to solve various issues based on a timely understanding of social changes and new social issues.
In fiscal 2011, NEC took new steps to further enhance support for developing social entrepreneurs, as well as to address poverty issues in developing countries. Efforts were also made to improve the NEC Make-a-Difference Drive (MDD; explained later), which has become well established as a global "One NEC" activity. This section reports on new initiatives that commenced in fiscal 2011 and other noteworthy activities.

Developing Entrepreneurs for Social Innovation

NEC Social Entrepreneurship School Business Supporters (NEC’s Pro Bono)

NEC Social Entrepreneurship School Business Supporters

Social entrepreneurs are attracting attention for their ability to solve social issues through businesses as leaders of a new public infrastructure. However, many social entrepreneurs cannot expand their activities because of the lack of resources.
With the cooperation of the NPO Service Grant, in fiscal 2011 NEC started a program called the NEC Social Entrepreneurship School Business Supporters (NEC’s Pro Bono). The program aims to put the professional skills of NEC Group employees to good use in solving various issues faced by social entrepreneurs.

The project targets are the graduates of the program run by NEC to foster young social entrepreneurs, NEC Social Entrepreneurship School. These graduates can receive various kinds of support such as website renewal and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) solutions for around six months.
NEC hopes that through their experience in helping social entrepreneurs innovate society, participants will not only increase their awareness of general consumer sentiment, but also create new services and solutions. An additional aim is to further increase the range in which the professional skills of NEC Group employees are contributing to society.

ICSE Business Plan Competition 2010

ICSE Business Plan Competition 2010

On October 16, 2010, the ICSE Business Plan Competition 2010 was held at the Campus Innovation Center Tokyo in Minato Ward, Tokyo by the International Center for Social Entrepreneurship (ICSE), with the support of NEC Corporation.
The event called on social entrepreneurs from around the world to submit their business plans for recognition via a presentation of awards. For the event, NEC established the "NEC Award" to recognize outstanding business plans utilizing IT. At this competition, the winner of the first NEC Award was Nhat Vuong (right photo) from Vietnam, who proposed a plan for a charity website using social media called "i-kifu".

BOP Business Development in Emerging and Developing Countries

BOP* business development aims to address social issues within emerging and developing countries through business activities. In order to promote the sustainable development of emerging and developing countries, Win-Win business models must be developed that help to improve the lives of disadvantaged people while also generating profits for a company. To construct sound business models, it is vital to develop strong partnerships with local NGO/NPOs well versed in local social issues.
In preparation, in fiscal 2011 NEC initiated joint research into potential BOP business development at key NEC Group sites in India with Umezu Seminar, an organization based in Keio University’s Faculty of Business and Commerce. This research studied in detail the questions of which business sectors could best improve the lives of India’s disadvantaged people and which established local NGO/NPOs would be the ideal partners for business activities. Farming reform was identified as a sector where business could help to improve the lives of millions of farmers, who comprise the majority of India’s underprivileged people. NEC is actively considering partnerships with two NGOs to establish IT-related business ventures.
Future plans also call for a demonstration test.

* BOP: Base of the Pyramid
Refers to the base layer of the population pyramid when segmented by income, and represents approximately 70% of the world’s population, approximately 4 billion, living on an annual income of less than $3,000.

NEC Make-a-Difference Drive (MDD)

Based on the motto of "Think Globally, Act Locally," the "NEC Make-a-Difference Drive" is a corporate citizenship program directed at local communities in which all NEC Group employees participate on a global basis.
Based on the slogan "Nature, Education, Community" that uses the letters in the company name for the three key words, NEC MDD has happened every year since 1999.
Through NEC MDD, NEC Group employees around the world volunteer to take part in activities that make a valuable social contribution to local communities. This helps employees to discover something new on a personal level, while helping to cultivate stronger group cohesiveness as "One NEC" and a corporate mindset of high social commitment. In turn this helps NEC to achieve the goal of creating enhanced corporate value.

Results of MDD activities in Fiscal 2011

In fiscal 2011, new records were set as proactive participation by NEC Corporation and domestic and overseas group companies resulted in 956 participating sites organizing 3,887 programs, with roughly 174,478 participants on a cumulative basis donating a total of 153,871 hours of their time.
The NEC Group Action Guidelines on Biodiversity were formulated for the entire Group in line with "ecosystem and biodiversity preservation," one of the key priorities of the NEC Group Environmental Management Action Plan 2017/2030. Under these guidelines, NEC began pressing ahead with biodiversity initiatives. As a result, the number of participants in biodiversity preservation programs was 6,211, surpassing the Company’s target of 6,000.
In fiscal 2012, we will put the full weight of the entire NEC Group behind restoration and recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake, while continuing to pursue biodiversity preservation programs and other activities.
