Message from Top Management

Mr. Kaoru Yano, President (Representative Director)

Transmitting from the CSR Annual Report

Mr. Masaki Fukui, Senior Vice President (Environment)

Contributing to the Environment through IT

The NEC Group is working to reduce the environmental impact left by our customers and society through making eco-friendly IT devices and providing IT solutions. Contributing to the environment through information technology in this way is what is implied by the phrase "Ecology through IT." Although IT devices are convenient and have become indispensible in making our lives easier, the current jump in power consumption due to the rapid increase in these devices has become a major issue in the prevention of global warming. NEC realizes its growing responsibility in providing IT devices and solutions to prevent global warming. To fulfill this responsibility, the entire NEC Group has set specific targets and is steadily implementing measurements to achieve them.

Environmental Activity Accomplishments for FY 2009

Accomplishments for FY 2009 included the achievement of annual targets for reducing the environmental impact of production activities, improving product energy efficiency, and providing IT solutions that reduce environmental impact. Production activities were implemented steadily with productivity improvements made through production innovation, planned introduction of highly efficient energy-saving equipment, substitution of chemicals like PFC and HFC, and introduction of elimination devices. These activities convert into the reduction of approximately 430,000 tons of CO2. As for improving the energy efficiency of products, the target was a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions during usage compared to that of products developed in FY 2006. This target was surpassed with a reduction of 45%. Moreover, due to the sufficiency and thoroughness of assessment at the development stage, the impact of reduction in CO2 emissions through providing IT solutions has increased to a significant 1.89 million tons. This result brings realization of the complete elimination of CO2 emissions, a target of the NEC Environmental Management Vision 2010 developed in March 2003, much closer. We expect with certainty to carry through with this target in the remaining two years.

Working toward Realization of "An Information Society that is Friendly to Humans and the Earth"

In the "NEC Group Vision 2017" released in April 2008, we announced that in 10 years, we would be a "leading global company leveraging the power of innovation to realize an information society friendly to humans and the earth." In FY 2010, we will develop a long-term target for methods and realization of specific contributions to the global environment in 2017 based on our group vision.
