Environmental Data: Effects on the environment

Mass Balance of Business Operations

Mass balance clearly indicates the direct impact of business activities of the environment. NEC uses mass balance to implement measures to reduce environmental impact.

Changes in Greenhouse Gas (Other than CO2) Emissions

Greenhouse gas (*) emissions other than CO2 in FY 2009 decreased 370,000 tons (CO2 conversion) or a 47% decrease compared to the previous year due to the effect of new facilities with removal equipment and substituting gas.
We have promoted greater introduction of exclusive equipment in anticipation of an increase in production to reach the target of 500,000 tons or a 50% decrease compared to FY 2006 established in FY 2011. The result is that the target was overachieved due to a decrease in production.
NEC is also establishing and managing targets classified into CO2 emissions and greenhouse gas emissions other than CO2 due to energy use according to a Kyoto Protocol Target Achievement Plan formulated by the Government in April 2005.

(*) Target substances: PFC, HFC, SF6, NF3, N2O

Changes in Greenhouse Gas (Other than CO2) Emissions * Target Scope: NEC Headquarters in Japan (Headquarters/Tamachi area, 4 plants, research facilities), 15 manufacturing sub-companies, 41 service and software sub-companies, NEC Electronics, 9 independent affiliates

Changes in Usage of Regulated Chemical Substances

Changes in Usage of Regulated Chemical Substances Related laws: Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Control Law, Industrial Safety and Health Law (Ordinance on Prevention of Hazards Due to Specified Chemical Substances, etc.),fire laws (hazardous substances), PRTR Laws and Air Pollution control Law (hazardous air pollutants)
* Target Scope: NEC Headquarters in Japan (Headquarters/Tamachi area, 4 plants, research facilities), 15 manufacturing sub-companies, 41 service and software sub-companies, NEC Electronics, 9 independent affiliates

NOx and SOx emissions

By switching energy source from heavy oil to city gas and NAS battery, we lowered the total sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions of all sites to 30 tons in FY 2009, a reduction of 51% compared to FY 2003. We also lowered our nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions to 193 tons, which is a reduction of 57% compared to FY 2003.

Use of Ozone Depleting Substances at Manufacturing Sites

NEC declared total discontinuance of chlorofluorocarbon gases by March 31, 1995,well ahead of the total global discontinuance. NEC also totally discontinued the use of chlorofluorocarbon gases for cleaning by June 10, 1993, two years ahead of the global target. NEC plans to completely phase out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in air conditioners and halon in fire extinguishers by the end of FY 2011.

Analysis and Monitoring of Pollutions (Measurements Taken by NEC and Domestic Manufacturing Subsidiaries)

NEC conducts environment measurements required by laws and regulations and by local government ordinances based on an annual plan. Efforts are made to monitor environmental conservation activities continually to avoid inconveniencing local and neighboring communities. Drainage, exhaust emissions, noise and vibration emitted by plants are periodically monitored and checked. Voluntary control standards that are stricter than legally required standards are set, and compliance is made with legal requirements by using a trend control technique that detects anomalous values early based on trends in past data.
