NEC to Supply i-mode Mobile Handsets for KPN Mobile Group
-The first i-mode TM mobile handsets outside Japan-
Tokyo, February 25, 2002 - NEC Corporation (NEC) announced that KPN Mobile Group and NEC have signed an agreement whereby NEC will supply mobile handsets for KPN Mobile's i-mode service. As part of the agreement, NEC will deliver its "N21i" i-mode handsets to KPN Mobile's operations in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, thus becoming the first supplier of i-mode mobile handsets outside Japan. The value and the volume of the contract were not disclosed. KPN Mobile will be the first company in Europe to introduce i-mode in spring 2002. Practical i-mode tests with a group of users equipped with NEC's handsets began in December 2001.
Based on Japanese designs, NEC's i-mode handsets have been specially developed and produced for the European market . Distinctive features of the handset include a much larger screen with colour display (1.9 inches) and dramatically improved sound quality of ringing tunes. Users can also send and receive e-mails containing up to 1000 characters and SMS messages of up to 160 characters. The handset is GPRS (and thus GSM)-compatible, and the built-in i-mode browser enables users to access both i-mode-compatible HTML and WML1.X (WAP) content. Not only can users make and receive mobile telephone calls and send and receive SMS messages and e-mail, they can exclusively gain access to all i-mode services with the N21i handset.
Peter van Delft, Director KPN Mobile i-mode Office said, "with i-mode, KPN Mobile is introducing a totally new concept in mobile data services to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Thanks to our collaboration with NEC, who has great experience as an i-mode handset supplier, we believe that we can offer a unique experience resulting in very enthusiastic customers."
"NEC is now focusing its businesses on Broadband & Mobile Internet, and the mobile handset area is the key business into which NEC is putting its major resources and efforts." said Ben Nakamura, Associate Senior Vice President and Executive General Manager of NEC's Mobile Terminal Business Unit. "NEC is confident of leading the mobile Internet field in the supply of handsets with the most sophisticated features and of the highest quality and reliability, thanks to the experience as an i-mode and 3G handset supplier in Japan. This agreement with KPN Mobile gives us a strong foothold to take our position forward not only in Europe but also in the worldwide 2.5G market."
At CeBIT 2002, NEC's mobile terminals corner will showcase the latest mobile telecommunications devices and applications, including GPRS and 3G terminals, as well as the N21i.
