NEC Delivers New High-Performance System-on-a-Chip to Set-Top Box and Digital TV Markets

-Dual-Processor SoC for Set-Top Box and Digital TV Applications Offers Compelling Mix of Price and Performance-
µPD61120
"µPD61120"

SANTA CLARA, Calif., DÜSSELDORF, Germany, TOKYO, August 5, 2002 - NEC Electronics Inc. (United States), NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH and NEC Corporation (NASDAQ: NIPNY) (FTSE: 6701q.1) today announced a new system-on-a-chip (SoC) audio/video decoder solution for use in set-top box and digital television applications. The SoC (NEC part number µPD61120) features dual 32-bit MIPS(R) processors to maximize performance and offers decoding support for popular audio formats including Dolby(R) Digital and MP3. The audio/video decoder SoC is also software upgradeable, allowing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to easily µPDate application support in the field via the SoC's integrated soft modem.

Key to the performance capabilities of NEC's new SoC is its two integrated MIPS processor cores. In set-top boxes based on single processor designs, the processor must support both the operating system and decoding of audio and video streams simultaneously, which can severely limit performance. NEC's µPD61120 SoC devotes one processor to supporting the operating system and the other to supporting real-time audio and video decoding. This arrangement significantly improves processing performance, enhances graphics quality and provides the ability to support more audio standards compared to competing solutions. A high level of integration is achieved by implementing the SoC in NEC's advanced 0.13-micron fabrication process.

"The µPD61120 dual-processor audio/video decoder SoC solution is uniquely capable of delivering the performance required for next-generation advanced digital media applications," said Katsu Itagaki, director, digital consumer and embedded processors, System LSI Solutions business unit, NEC Electronics Inc. "We believe that our new SoC has significantly raised the price/performance bar and will emerge as a best-in-class solution for set-top box and digital TV applications."

"NEC led the industry in 1998 by delivering the first single-chip solution that fully integrated all core elements needed for backend processing in a set-top box," said Colin Smith, head of NEC's Multimedia Application Centre, NEC Electronics (Europe) GmbH. "Once again, NEC has demonstrated its technical leadership by delivering a powerful single-chip solution at a price point that enables its mass deployment in low-cost set-top boxes and digital TVs."

Key Features of the µPD61120 SoC

  • Dual MIPS32 4Kc CPUs

  • 225 MIPS performance at 187 megahertz (MHz) frequency

  • 3.3-volt (V) interface and 1.5V core operation

  • Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) for DDR SDRAM

  • Programmable transport stream de-multiplexer

  • Digital video broadcasting (DVB) and DirecTV(R) compliance

  • Serial or parallel stream interface

  • High-speed data output port for IEEE-1394 interface

  • Audio MPEG1/MPEG2 compliance

  • NTSC, PAL and SECAM compliance

About NEC Electronics Digital Audio/Visual Solutions
NEC Electronics offers a broad range of system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for digital AV products. For digital set-top box applications, NEC Electronics offers both the cost-effective µPD61120 family for basic set-top boxes and the high-performance µPD61130 family, which incorporates a MIPS(R) processor core and a built-in integrated development environment (IDE) and PCI interface for personal video recorders (PVRs) and dual MPEG2 stream decoding. NEC's µPD61151 and µPD61152 single-chip large-scale integration (LSI) MPEG2 products integrate an audio encoder, video encoder and 32-bit V850 microcontroller to enable high-quality, low-power digital audio and video encoding. NEC's IEEE-based µPD72891 and µPD72893 large-scale integration (LSI) chips provide a high-speed serial bus with an embedded digital video codec, making them ideal for receiving and transmitting multimedia data between multiple devices.
