NEC Laboratories China Commence Operations

TOKYO, September 8, 2003 - NEC Corporation today announced the start of operations at NEC (China) Co., Ltd. NEC Laboratories China (hereafter referred to as NEC Laboratories China). The new base will focus on research for mobile information systems for next-generation internet in the China market. Through the driving power of its exceptional Chinese researchers NEC Laboratories China aims to generate global leading technology research results by concentrating on China market demands and characteristics. The opening ceremony for the new laboratories was held today in Beijing.
NEC Laboratories China is a division of NEC (China) Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as NEC China) and is located at Tsinghua Science Park in Beijing. The newly appointed managing director, Dr. Hsueh Min-Yu, has many years experience in Silicon Valley and is renowned for his exceptional achievements. 30 first class Chinese engineers with excellent experience and doctorate qualifications will be employed within the first year. It is expected that this number will rise to 100 within 3 years.
The laboratories will concentrate on making advancements in mobile service architecture and platforms for next-generation web information. China's mobile phone numbers already exceed 250 million making it one of the world's most important mobile communications markets. Mobile communications currently play an important part in everyday life in China.
It is thought that mobile communications, such as voice and picture exchange, place and object recognition, superimposing of internet information, and various new multimedia information services will play a very important role in the near future. NEC Laboratories China intends to contribute to society through the creation of new technologies and enhance everyday living through new kinds of IT/network integrated services.
NEC's research activities have been carried out at its Central Research Laboratories in Japan and at its laboratories in America and Germany. The addition of NEC Laboratories China will further enhance its research activities and presence in the world. NEC Laboratories China will carry out its research through close collaboration with other NEC laboratories worldwide.
