*****For immediate use November 6, 2007
Tokyo and London, November 6, 2007 --- NEC Corporation today announced that it has been elected to the board of the Femto Forum, the independent industry association that supports femtocell deployment worldwide. The appointment comes as part of the Femto Forum move to introduce new members from the vendor and the operator community on the board.
NEC is currently developing its femtocell solution and already has strong technology partnerships with Femto Forum members, Ubiquisys, Kineto Wireless and Tatara Systems. As a board member, NEC will play an active role in helping promote the uptake of femtocell technologies through open standards, market education and ecosystem development.
Femtocells are low-power access points that can combine mobile and Internet technologies within the home. The femtocell unit generates a personal mobile phone signal in the home and connects this to the operator's network through the Internet. This will allow improved coverage and capacity for each user within their home.
Tadatoshi Fujiwara, General Manager of Mobile Network Solutions Division, commented: "There has been much discussion about femtocell technologies and how they can be harnessed most effectively. As with any emerging technology, femtocell development has to be carefully nurtured and steered in the best strategic direction in order to ensure longevity and successful end user application. We see that the Femto Forum is very successfully bringing together the operator and vendor communities under one roof with the aim of fostering greater understanding of femtocell technology and applications. NEC is greatly anticipating the opportunity to contribute to this and bring its expertise to help the Femto Forum achieve its goals. NEC has a very strong and proud heritage of delivering innovation in the communications industry and we are looking forward to leveraging this within the Femto Forum to enable the full potential of femtocell technology to be realised."
