Tokyo, April 7, 2008 - NEC Corporation announced today that it has enhanced its virtual PC thin client system, VirtualPCCenter, with sales of the new system commencing immediately.
The three main enhancements of the new system are outlined below.
| (1) | Upgraded system administration functions in software installed on the virtual PC thin client system management server automatically adjust the number of virtual PC servers operating to meet the workload needs of end users. These functions dramatically reduce energy consumption during data center operations, delivering energy savings across the entire thin client system of up to 62% over conventional PCs (1). |
| (2) | Launch of the low-cost “Express5800/120Rj-2 VPCC” virtual PC server set, which offers the ideal arrangement for organizations looking to start small with as little as 10 users. |
| (3) | Expanded lineup of thin client terminals, including the low-price entry model “US110E,” and the “US300” dual display thin client terminal for multiple-screen processing. |
Virtual PC thin client systems have been widely praised for delivering operational management efficiencies with minimum wastage of IT resources through the use of VMware desktop virtualization to centralize IT desktop workloads on a small number of highly reliable servers while providing all the user-friendly benefits of traditional PC environments. On the back of such praise virtual PC thin client systems are being deployed in increasing numbers across the globe. The new enhancements will make it easier to deploy thin client systems from a cost perspective, while creating new value from an environmental perspective by delivering system-wide energy savings, as well as a dramatic reduction in CO2 emissions.
NEC has released the following new products to complement the enhanced Virtual PC Center thin client system.

The following are the major benefits of the enhanced VirtualPCCenter thin client system.
| (1) | "US110E" low-cost entry terminal A palm-sized thin client terminal (W150mm x D94mm x H30.4mm). A combination of VPN and one-time passwords(5) achieves greater security than VPN alone. |
| (2) | "US300" dual display terminal A thin client terminal designed for multiple-screen applications. The wide screen display is ideally suited for displaying multiple windows or extended spreadsheets. |
| (1) | Compatible with Windows(R) Vista(R) In addition to existing compatibility with the Windows(R) XP(R) operating system for virtual PCs, the enhanced VirtualPCCenter also supports Windows(R) Vista(R).(6) |
| (2) | Enhanced system administration functions Improved management screen displays and uniform operability make it easier to manage operations and monitor system status. Functions for the simultaneous delivery of security patches and applications to all virtual PCs have been upgraded, offering improved operability in environments where multiple virtual PCs are used. |
| (3) | Enhanced Security Added security functions limit the terminals that can be connected to the virtual PC server, allowing only those connections that have been made using authorized client management functions. This delivers advanced security benefits by making connections to virtual PC unavailable to unauthorized terminals, such as PCs brought into company offices by non-company personnel. |
With the imminent arrival of the NGN era, thin client systems are attracting the attention of a range of enterprises and government bodies seeking the enhanced security, reduced TCO, mobile working styles and business continuity that can be achieved through centralized data management. At the same time, the issue of global warming has generated increased interest in the environmental benefits of thin client systems, including reduced carbon dioxide emissions.
NEC's enhanced VirtualPCCenter thin client system has been developed to respond to these evolving market trends, and represents an integral part of NEC's environment-conscious business approach.
"NEC's newly enhanced VirtualPCCenter solution delivers virtual desktops that are faster to deploy, less costly to maintain and manage, and more secure than traditional PCs," says Jeff Jennings, Vice President of Desktop Products and Solutions at VMware. "Our customers will appreciate VirtualPCCenter's enhanced management capabilities, energy-efficient technology and rich multimedia end-user experience delivered in a simplified, packaged VMware virtual desktop."
