NEC and ADT jointly Conduct Pre-Tests to Obtain Wave 2 Certification for M-Taiwan and WiMAX Forum -NEC and ADT contribute to the Advancement of Taiwan's WiMAX Industry-

***For immediate use June 5th, 2008

Taipei & Tokyo, June 5th, 2008 - NEC Corporation (NEC) announced that it has concluded the joint "Wave-2 Certification" pre-testing of M-Taiwan and WiMAX Forum in cooperation with the Taiwanese WiMAX Forum Designated Certification Lab, "ADT" (Advance Data Technology Corporation). NEC has provided WiMAX Base Station systems and Subscriber Terminals for ADT in order to conduct WAVE 2 Certification testing on M-Taiwan technologies. Following the trials, NEC and ADT have successfully verified the feasibility of M-Taiwan certification, and made significant progress towards WiMAX Forum's Wave2 Certification.

WAVE 2 Certification is an essential requirement for both the WiMAX Forum and M-Taiwan technologies. NEC's cooperative developments with ADT have satisfied a great deal of the certification requirements in advance of expectations, and represent a significant move forward towards official WAVE 2 recognition.

Positive testing results are technologically critical to assure that the performance of WiMAX systems surpass that of competing wireless communications, such as GSM/GPRS and 3G mobile networks (W-CDMA/cdma2000). WiMAX technology focuses on ultra high speed data transmission, and its commercial viability depends heavily on achieving critical processing figures.

In August 2007, WiMAX commercial licenses were issued to six operators in Taiwan. However, even prior to that time, NEC had been supporting local Taiwan WiMAX industries through a variety of channels, including the cooperative WiMAX certification activity with ADT.

Furthermore, in December 2007, NEC business benefited from Tatung InfoComm's order for a total mobile WiMAX system consisting of base stations and peripheral equipment. This was followed up by the successful evaluation of NEC's Hua-Lien WiMAX system from Taiwan's Industrial Development Bureau, which marked the first passing grade for the M-Taiwan project and was subsequently implemented by six commercial WiMAX operators.

NEC will continue supporting contributions to M-Taiwan's WAVE 2 Certification in order to encourage local industries to play a greater role in Taiwan's development of WiMAX Forum.
