Tokyo, November 4, 2008 - NEC Corporation announced today that Mr. Kaoru Kenyoshi has been named vice-chairman for the upcoming term (2009 – 2012) of an International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Study Group at the World Telecommunications Standardization Assembly (WTSA-08) held from October 21 to 30, 2008, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The appointment marks the first time in 8 years that a representative from NEC has been named to a position as high as vice-chairman.
The International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication sector (ITU-T) of the WTSA meets only once every four years. This year’s assembly is responsible for determining upcoming standardization topics, approving standardization structure, and selecting the chairman and vice-chairman of Study Groups (SG) that carry out designated standardization activities for the next study period (2009 – 2012). NEC’s Kaoru Kenyoshi has been named vice-chairman to Study Group 11 (SG11).
One of SG11’s primary study topics is the management of requirements and protocols for signaling systems, which includes Next Generation Networks (NGN) and IPTV. The next study period is expected to devote a great deal of attention towards the development of these potentially leading future services.
Additionally, NEC Europe’s Mischa Schmidt, has been named vice-chairman (signaling system manager) of the European standardization organization’s (ETSI TISPAN) working group, WG3. The selection of two NEC Group members to leading positions of signaling system research and standards development teams reflects both NEC’s dedication to the support of standardization strategies and the high regard held for the company’s valued members.
NEC leverages its experience in research and development of network product technologies to play a leading role in the contributions to global standardization activities. Moreover, as a provider of communications devices based on these global standards, NEC is ideally positioned to drive the diffusion and speed of communication network technologies and services.
