Tokyo, December 11, 2008 - NEC Corporation (NEC) announced today that NEC Hong Kong Ltd., NEC's sales organization in Hong Kong, received an order for a biometrics based Automated Passenger Clearance System (APC System) from the Macau Public Security Forces Bureau (MPSFB).
There will be total of 147 automated gates (e-Channels) installed at four locations within Macau, including ferry terminals and border crossings. The new system will provide fast and accurate passenger clearance by checking fingerprint information of those registered with Macau's resident ID cards, or taking fingerprints of those being registered for the first time with the MPSFB.
Installation of the new system, which features superior biometrics ID authentication, and automated investigation procedures, ensures that smooth ID verification will take place throughout immigration procedures. Also, the new system consists of mobile devices which remotely monitor the operation of gates and support the efficient operations of immigration control.
The project is contracted to run for ten years and includes the maintenance, installation and introduction of e-Channels in July 2009. The system's initial phase is configured for fingerprint certification, followed by plans for a second phase that include an upgrade to face recognition.
In November 2007, NEC launched immigration systems using both fingerprint and face recognition for Japan's Immigration Bureau, Ministry of Justice. The company has introduced a total of 13 biometrics based systems in the greater China region that include APC Systems, e-Passport and the Shenzhen Bay Automated Vehicle Clearance System for the Hong Kong Immigration Office. NEC views its selection as the provider for Macau's latest immigration system as recognition of the company's technological capabilities and prior industry accomplishments.
As recent trends in public security enhancement continue to move forward, NEC plans to expand its security solutions, including biometrics and image observation, in order to provide safe and secure environments for markets all over the world.
