NEC JOINS 'FEMTOZONE' AT MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2009

***For immediate use February 6, 2009

The FemtoZone will serve as the industry's central information point on femtocell markets and technologies at Mobile World Congress, featuring public presentations from global operators and a broad ecosystem of solution vendors including NEC.

Tokyo February 6, 2009 - NEC today announced it will be participating in the FemtoZone at Mobile World Congress 2009. The FemtoZone, which is hosted by the GSMA and the Femto Forum, will serve as a one-stop shop for all visitors interested in learning about the latest developments in the femtocell industry as it undergoes a pivotal year for deployment.

The FemtoZone (Stand - 2.1B34) will feature a daily schedule of public presentations from operators and vendors on the major opportunities and challenges facing the femtocell market. NEC will be making a presentation about 'Why consumers will buy femtocells' at 11.30 on Monday 16 February. NEC will also be displaying its complete end-to-end femtocell solution that includes the 3G Femtocell Access Point, Femtocell/Wi-Fi Integrated Access Device, Femtocell Gateway and Access Point Management System in the femtocell ecosystem product showcase in the FemtoZone as well as on its own stand 8A125 (Hall 8).

Stephen Lightley, NEC Europe, says: "Femtocells have the potential to support viral consumption of enhanced services and data and could play a crucial role in underpinning the explosive growth of mobile broadband usage. The latest consumer gadgets and PDAs are driving previously unseen levels of mobile internet usage, and across the industry the use of USB HSDPA modems has really taken off, effectively competing with DSL in some markets."

Lightley continues: "All this places huge capacity demands on operators' networks, and because so much of that usage is at home, femtocells coupled with DSL could provide an alternative capacity resource. Consumers will reap the benefits and femtocell technology is set to change the economics of the network as well as the way we use our mobiles. The way consumers use the mobile internet and interact with each other is changing; social networking and micro blogs have increased the immediacy of requirements on the network. Femtocell technology evolves the laptop experience to the handset making real mobile broadband a reality."

"Over the past year the femtocell industry has overcome major technical and business challenges paving the way in 2009 for operators to introduce commercial services. As such the Mobile World Congress is going to be a key event for operators to cement their consumer propositions to ensure their launches are as successful as possible," said Professor Simon Saunders, Chairman of The Femto Forum.

"This year's Mobile World Congress marks the beginning of the real acid test for femtocells. The FemtoZone will attempt to address the key issues, such as what is going to be the key driver for successful deployments and are there going to be further technical hurdles to be addressed before we see large scale deployment," said Robindhra Mangtani, Director of the GSMA project on Femtocells.

About The Femto Forum

Femtocells are low-power wireless access points that operate in licensed spectrum to connect standard mobile devices to a mobile operator's network using residential DSL or cable broadband connections. The Femto Forum (www.femtoforum.org) has been set up to promote the wide-scale adoption of femtocells. The Forum will support and drive the adoption of industry wide standards and common architectures to enable the widespread adoption & deployment of femtocells by operators around the world. It will direct and implement a multi-faceted marketing campaign to raise the profile, drive technology development & deployment and to promote the potential of femto solutions among industry stakeholders, journalists, analysts, regulators, special interest groups, standards bodies and consumers.
