NEC and BLADE Network Technologies form a Strategic Partnership

*** For immediate use September 8, 2009

Tokyo, September 8, 2009 - NEC Corporation announced today the establishment of an alliance and capital investment with Blade Network Technologies (BLADE, Note 1), one of the world's leading manufacturers of high speed datacenter network switches for servers and storage.

BLADE was established in 2006, after spinning off from Nortel Networks, and holds a variety of superior high speed network technologies for server switches, data center storage and network virtualization. BLADE's 10Gigabit LAN switch for blade servers is particularly accomplished, boasting approximately 40% share of the world market. (Note 2)

Through this strategic alliance, NEC and BLADE plan to jointly introduce advanced product lines that feature virtualization, high speed network switches and superior cost performance. The alliance will also enable NEC to enhance and expand its blade server product portfolio in order to meet market demand and growing user needs. Both companies will conduct joint marketing and share sales resources in Japan. NEC will also dispatch a board member to BLADE and further strengthen the companies' relationship.

NEC has resold BLADE's high speed LAN switch module on an OEM basis for NEC's blade server, SIGMABLADE, since 2007. "Smart Panel" is a standard function for SIGMABLADE, which adjusts easily to graphical interfaces and was worked in close cooperation with BLADE. Furthermore, as a result of the newly developed “vIO control function,” available from August, 2009, reconstruction is no longer necessary during configuration changes.

Due to the worldwide economic crisis, the server market is expected to undergo an exceptionally difficult period. However, high growth is expected for blade servers and their wide range of "saving" characteristics, including space saving, energy saving and virtualization. The switches installed in the blade servers are crucial components for constructing flexible systems. NEC's recognition of the importance of new development and alliances to the expansion of blade sever business led to the formation of this strategic partnership and capital investment.

NEC will continue to strengthen this partnership and aims to further cultivate business in the server domain.
