NEC's RFID Temperature Traceability System Deployed by Leading Chinese Medical Supply Distributor

*** For immediate use March 2, 2010

Tokyo, March 2, 2010 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the deployment of its RFID (wireless IC tag) quality control temperature-managed traceability system by one of China's leading medical supply distribution wholesalers, Jointown Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. (Jointown).

The Jointown system outfits boxes used for storing and transporting medical supplies with RFID tags that measure and record temperature data. Upon arrival at a location, RFID reader/writers are able to collect registered information from boxes within a few seconds, which formerly required manual confirmation and additional working processes. This information is then saved in a temperature analysis database and referred to for improvement of delivery routes and cold insulation materials.

Jointown will first implement the new system for medical supplies that require strict temperature management, including vaccines and blood products. Over the next two years, Jointown is planning to expand to 34 distribution centers in China and to use 1,500 tags. Future services are expected to include alarms that are sent to drivers regarding sudden or unusual temperature changes using the wireless collection of real-time delivery information through active RFID tags and GPRS.

Jointown is undergoing rapid growth and annual sales have recently jumped more than 45%. The implementation of this RFID service is being done to improve the company's medical supply quality control and to reinforce its competitive strength.

Activities to ensure the safety of medical supplies and foodstuff are accelerating on a global scale. Until recently, although tracking systems that monitor the quality control of production processes from raw materials to final products were in place, there were insufficient mechanisms for confirming quality management at the distribution level. Just in 2008, for example, Quality Management Terms for Pharmaceutical Products began to be enforced in China in order to improve the control and accuracy of medical supply distribution.

NEC's RFID traceability solutions that monitor temperature, humidity and shock levels in support of quality medical supply and foodstuff distribution, are expected to continue growing throughout international markets that include China, Brazil and others.
