NEC Introduces 131MHz/168MHz VR4121 Processor for Next-Generation Portables Integrated, Feature-Rich CPU Solution Adds to Expanding Windows-CE Supported RISC Processor Line

[VR41218(TM) microprocessors]
VR4121TM microprocessors

NEC Corporation today announced the addition of its new 131MHz and 168MHz VR4121TM microprocessors for next-generation portables to its expanding line of Windows[resist] CE-supported 64-bit MIPS[resist] RISC CPUs. Supporting the VR4121 processor to provide a comprehensive solution for system designers, NEC also offers the VRC4171 companion chip for additional peripheral capabilities such as color LCD graphics and PC CardTM control.

Highly integrated, the VR4121 has many on-chip peripheral features: a memory controller which supports SDRAM to increase system performance; a fast infrared (IR) IrDA[resist]-standard interface that performs wireless communication at speeds of 0.5 megabits-per-second (Mbps) up to 4 Mbps; a 10-bit A/D converter, and a D/A converter that supports audio output. The device also includes a high-speed 16550 serial interface, a separate debugging port, a 96-key keyboard controller, a light-emitting diode (LED) controller and a touchpanel controller. Together, these features assist in lowering overall product/system cost by reducing power requirements and space, both of which are essential for handheld consumer applications.

System designers for battery-driven, portable and handheld devices, demand superior performance, high integration, compact size and low-power features. The integrated VR4121 CPU, combined with the additional features of the VRC4171 companion chip, provides a comprehensive solution for these needs, making it an ideal choice for application in handheld PCs, palm-sized PCs, vertical handheld devices, point-of-sale terminals, global positioning systems and micro notebooks.
