NEC to Supply DWDM system to AT&T

- NEC ANNOUNCES 160-CHANNEL DWDM PLANS -

NEC Corporation (NEC) (NASDAQ: NIPNY) and NEC America Inc. (NECAM) today announced that it has under development a 160-channel version of its SpectralWave family of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems - SpectralWave-160. NEC also announced that its current product, SpectralWave-32/64, supporting 32 channels of capacity upgradable to 64, has successfully completed AT&T certification testing and is currently being deployed in the AT&T network.

The SpectralWave-160, available late next year, uses NEC's industry-leading L-band (Long wavelength) Optical Amplifiers to achieve high channel counts and large capacity. In addition, the SpectralWave-160 achieves compact design and small footprint through the use of powerful new .18 micron semiconductor components. Like all members of the SpectralWave family, the SpectralWave-160 system is designed to carry traditional SONET traffic, as well as IP and other data traffic at OC-48 (2.5Gbps) and OC-192 (10Gbps) rates. In addition, it will handle multi-vendor interoperability with other equipment such as IP Routers, Optical Cross-connects, ATM Switches, and SONET Multiplexers.

"We need suppliers who can reliably deliver technology that helps us meet today's traffic demands and who have an R&D program that will keep AT&T ahead of tomorrow's growth," said George Gawrys, Division Manager, AT&T Transport Network Planning. "NEC's SpectralWave-32/64 is already helping us meet today's skyrocketing demand for increased speed and bandwidth."

"The certification and deployment by AT&T of our SpectralWave-32/64 and the launch of our 160-channel version represent important milestones for both NEC and the DWDM industry," added Kaoru Yano, President & CEO of NEC America. "We are listening to our customers carefully and delivering systems that not only meet capacity levels, but also deliver other value-added functionality at very attractive price/performance levels." For example, the SpectralWave-160 will also introduce leading edge technology such as tunable lasers and programmable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers.

Earlier this year, AT&T started wide scale deployment of the NEC ITS-2400A, an OC-48 SONET Multiplexer. AT&T is using the system for carrying all types of sub-OC-48 private line and switched traffic and for SONET ring restoration.

AT&T is the world's premier provider of voice and data communications, with more than 80 million customers, including businesses, government, and consumers. AT&T runs the world's largest, most powerful long-distance network and the largest wireless network in North America. The company is a leading supplier of data and Internet services for businesses and the nation's largest direct Internet service provider to consumers. AT&T also provides local telephone service to a growing number of businesses.

NEC Corporation (NASDAQ: NIPNY) (FTSE: 6701q.l) pioneered the concept of C&C, the integration of Computers and Communications, and is the only company in the world to be counted among top ranking corporations spanning the wide range of fields essential for this vision of multimedia: computers, communications and electron devices. Employing in excess of 150,000 people around the world, NEC saw net sales in fiscal year 1998-99 amount to 4,759 billion yen (approx. US$40 billion).
